I come into the role of mentor with personal significance. I’m a mum of two teenagers who have faced their share of mental health challenges. Coming from a different cultural upbringing and education system, I had to learn sometimes through trial and error how best to support them. Previously, as a homeschooling parent, I’ve also experienced first-hand the dedication, adaptability, and patience it takes to guide young people through their education.
Additionally, my family moved many times due to military life, so I understand the challenges of adapting to new environments and how being from a different background can sometimes add to those challenges. I know that children and young people often face constant change, whether physical, social, emotional, educational, or environmental. These can be heavy burdens to navigate alone.
As a mentor, I hope to stand in the gap for a child or young person to champion them, to walk alongside them through these changes, and to support them where they may find challenges. It’s a privilege to do so.
